Launches

Where you take off

Mount 7 has one launch area in regular use, with separate north, south and hang-glider takeoffs, plus a historic launch below the summit. Elevations are the published values local pilots use.

Launch and summit are different places. The road ends at the lower launch; the summit sits about 3 km to the south-east and nearly 600 m higher.

About the model

Real elevation data, true scale

The mountain is built from Natural Resources Canada's CanElevation elevation data, not a generated or artistic model.

We first checked the High Resolution Digital Elevation Model (HRDEM). Its 1–2 m lidar mosaic covers the Columbia Valley floor around Golden but not Mount 7's upper slopes, launch or summit, so it can't carry the model on its own.

The model therefore uses NRCan's Medium Resolution Digital Elevation Model (MRDEM-30), the CanElevation Series 30 m terrain model. In this area it already includes the HRDEM lidar along the valley and uses NRCan-adjusted Copernicus GLO-30 elevations on the mountain, blended at the edges.

We reprojected the 30 m grid to UTM zone 11N without changing its spacing and packed it as 16-bit heights with 10 cm steps. The browser draws it at true horizontal and vertical scale with WebGL (three.js). Vertical exaggeration is off unless you switch it on, and the caption on the model always says which setting is in use.

MRDEM-30 accuracy, per NRCan's product specification: lidar-derived areas are typically within 1–3 m; GLO-30-derived areas within about 2–5 m RMSE, worse under dense forest. Elevations read from the model are approximate and labelled ≈ DEM. Full processing notes: docs/terrain.md.
